Champions League Part 2

The other Champions League semi-final is between Manchester United and Barcelona. The first leg was held the night before last at the Camp Nou, Barcelona's home ground. United played very defensively, while Barcelona had very high possession (I think it was about 65%). Christiano Ronaldo missed a penalty, and the final score was 0-0. Most people think the return game at Old Trafford will give Manchester United the advantage.

Champions League

This week, the semi-finals of the Champions' League began. Liverpool, who knocked out Arsenal (oh, no!) in the quarter-finals, played the first leg at home (Anfield) against Chelsea. t looked as if Liverpool were going to win the game, but unfortunately, in extra time, Riise scored an own goal! The score was 1-1, so most people think Chelsea have the advantage for the second leg, which will be played at Stamford Bridge next week.

Fantasy

I like fantasy books. The first ones I read as a child were The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. Later I read the Earthsea series (Ged Senki, in Japanese) and now I'm reading The Wheel of Time. The one I recommend to you is A Wizard of Earthsea, the first book in the Earthsea series.

The Curse of the Golden Flower

As you may know I like watching movies, whenever possible at the cinema, although recently I am often too busy to make it to the cinema as often as I would like. This week, though, I went to see The Curse of the Golden Flower. This is directed by Zhang Yimou (who you may know from Hero and The House of Flying Daggers)) and stars Chow Yun Fat (Replacement Killer; A Better Tomorrow, and so on) and Gong Li (Miami Vice, and many others).

Although the movie is known as the third in Zhang Yimou's trilogy of martial arts movies, it is very different from Hero or The House of Flying Daggers, and has fewer action scenes. Many critics compare it to Hamlet, and there are many complex plots unfolding at once, on the part of the Emperor, his wife, and the 3 princes. Some people say it is an allegory of the Tiananmen Incident from modern China. It was a little complicated for me, because I was trying to listen to the Chinese while reading the Japanese subtitles, and I didn't have time to do either very thoroughly.

Anyway, you can get more information at IMDB.

Chiru's diary: 1st class

Chiru wrote in her first post in the writing class:

I’m typing 10 minutes. What should I write? I can’t think of anything!

She hasn't enabled comments on her blog, so I decided to link to her post and address this common problem.
Here are a few random ideas for juppun ha juubun topics:

  • what I did last weekend

  • what I'm planning to do next weekend

  • one of the foods that I like

  • a recipe

  • a movie that I like

Any other good ideas?

Writing 3, 1st class

Hi everyone,

Welcome to Writing 3. In this class we'll be doing lots of blogging, including 6 essays and 12 book reviews. It should be lots of fun.

I'll give you a simple syllabus sheet during the first class, with more details to come later. For now, just remember that you need to write 5 posts a week, including a book review. Also, please remember your username and password and the URLs of the key sites, such as Blogger, that we use in the class.

That's all for now. Bye!

1st semester rush

I intended to do all my preparation in good time for my classes during the spring break. But unfortunately I was so busy with other work that I couldn't finish. And my office was very messy. So I was in a big rush this past week to get ready.

The Curse of the Golden Flower

The third and last of the movies starting next week that I'm interested in is The Curse of the Golden Flower, directed by Zhang Yimou, of Hero and Lovers fame. The story is often rather thin in Zhang's movies, but the action scenes are spectacular. Although Michael Clayton is the move I'm most interested in of the three, the Curse of the Golden Flower is the one that will benefit most from the big screen.

Michael Clayton

Another movie starting next week is Michael Clayton. It stars George Clooney (whom you may know from ER or Ocean's 11), and it looks like it's a legal drama. I really want to watch this one, but I doubt whether I'll have time while it's at the cinema. Perhaps I'll have to wait until it comes out on DVD.

Hitman

A lot of new movies are starting next week (April 12th). One of them is Hitman. It looks like it might be quite exciting.

Enchanted

I went to see Enchanted with my family today. My children thought it was a bit too long, but I had a very good time. I recommend that you go and see it if you have time.
