Writing IV: Final Class

  1. Delete duplicate or "dead" items from your sidebar.
  2. Clean up links in your sidebar.
  3. To the bottom of your WAI post, add your top typing speed and the date.
  4. Remember that the test is on January 30th. You still have 2 weeks for more blogging.
  5. Delete or edit book reviews with only or mainly copied text. Less than half of each post should be copied from the book, and the copied part must be marked clearly.
  6. If you have free time, work with a partner to check spelling and grammar in one of your posts.

Narnia revisited

Did you see the first Narnia movie, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe? The second one, Prince Caspian, is set to play from May this year. Check out the trailer! It looks very exciting.
You can see lots of other trailers, too, at Apple's website.

BE4 January 11th

For today's class, and for the last class on 25th January, we won't do anything new. These are good opportunities for you to ask me questions or to get help with any problems you're having, to revise earlier work, or to catch up. Some suggestions:

  1. Write more posts
  2. Update your LibraryThing collection
  3. Make sure that your sidebar has: a link to your podcast; LibraryThing; Recent Comments; Tags/Labels.
  4. Write comments on other people's blogs
  5. Get together with a friend to check each other's English in some of your posts, especially in your podcast.
If you want to try Number 5, you could use the following checklist:
  • Punctuation: Do you have ONE space after each period and comma, and ZERO spaces before each period and comma?
  • Santangen: Did you remember to add an "s" in expressions like "He goes".
  • Capital letters: Do all your sentences begin with a CAPITAL LETTER? Do people's names and names of places begin with a CAPITAL LETTER? Are there any other CAPITAL LETTERS for no reason?
  • Structure: Is there a subject in each sentence? Do all sentences follow a clear pattern, such as S-V, S-V-O, or S-V-C?

Oliver Twist (Book Review 11)

This is a great book, in the Penguin Readers series (Level 4), although it's rather difficult for me and took about 4 hours to read. Oliver is a poor boy who lives in an orphanage.

Typing 13: Movies

I like movies very much. I like watching DVDs, but of course I like watching movies at the movie theater best. In Kumamoto we have several multiplex cinames, as well as several standard cinemas in the town center. Until recently I always preferred to go to Hikari no Mori for watching movies but last month I went to Diamond City Clea.

I was quite impressed with the movie theaters there. When you buy a ticket, if you show your Tsutaya or T-Point card, you get extra points and sometimes big discounts. Unfortunately the standard price is 1800, and there doesn’t seem to be a way to get a price of 1500 yen every time, unlike at Hikari no Mori, where you can always get a price of 1500 if you have a You me town card. Typing 13: Movies

I like movies very much. I like all kinds of movies, and I prefer to watch them in the movie theater. I used to go to Hikari no Mori to watch movies but recently I’ve discovered Warner cinemas in Clea. The cinams there are a bit more expensive but we can get T-Points there, like in Eneos and Tsutaya. There weren’t many interesting movies playing over the winter holiday, so I haven’t seen anything recently, but I’m looking forward to February and March when usually in Japan many good movies are on. I saw Johnny Depp on the news this morning, so I guess Sweeney Todd will be starting soon. I’m not sure what else is coming up. I also like watching DVDs but recently I’ve mainly been watching the TV series 24 and Alias. They’re both very interesting though Alias is a bit stupid sometimes. (147 words)

Writing 4: January 9th & 16th, 2008

Happy New Year and I hope you had a good winter holiday. As I mentioned in December, we won't do anything new in the last two classes. These classes are your last chances to make sure you are up-to-date in the course and to ask any final questions. Some points:

  1. How many posts have you written in each month of the course? How many words? (Remember there is still time to increase your word and post total for January.)
  2. Have you completed a presentation, checked it, uploaded it, and added it to your blog?
  3. Have you completed an essay, checked it, and posted it to your blog?
  4. Have you written 12 book reviews?
  5. Have you reached a typing speed of 100 words per minute and told me by email?
  6. Do you have labels in your sidebar? (The most important ones are book reviews, essay, presentation, photos, links, so that I can find them quickly.)
  7. Have you made a podcast? (This is optional.) If so, have you put a clear link in your sidebar so that I can find it? And have you made sure the URL is included in the list on my blog?
Today, we are going to make a new WAI post with up-to-date figures. You will need to make a WAI post in the exam, so make sure you master how to do this. You can use the rest of the class time and your free time to finish the WAI, finish any unfinished assignments, or just write more posts. Remember your target is 84 posts over the semester.
